Over ¢6 million stolen power retrieved – Tema ECG

The Tema Region of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in its vigilance retrieved GH¢6.2 million for power theft in 2021.

The region last year doubled its efforts in recovering every pesewa to help reduce commercial losses and improve revenue collection of the company.  

In an interview with Joy Business in Tema, the General Manager of the Tema region, Ing. Emmanuel Akinie, said several customers were apprehended last year.

“We were able to apprehend customers who were involved in power theft and an amount of ¢6.2 million was billed,” he indicated.

The region has over the years descended on recalcitrant customers who are bent on using electricity illegally by recovering millions of cedis from them through a special arrangement.

“Some customers are paying by installment in an agreement with ECG. A chunk of the said amount has been paid and those involved are expected to finish paying by end of June this year,” he revealed.

Tema Region through its various districts has been monitoring teams on the field consistently, uncovering such illegalities.

Once these infractions are uncovered, the revenue protection team takes these persons on.

There are also instances where individual customers or companies involved are handed over to the police as part of the investigative process.

Currently, three customers are being investigated by the police for illegal connections in 2021.
